Dublin : Refugee accommodation on Thorncastle Street in Ringsend, Dublin, set on fire by anti-asylum activists. Although there was no casualty, the fire in the capital city shocked the entire country.
Six fire engines, gardaí and Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene and brought the fire under control. Following the fire, the entire area was engulfed in smoke. At the same time, the fire was celebrated by anti-immigrants on social media.
Gardaí have launched an investigation into the incident. The fire broke out at two o’clock in the morning in the old pub building and the guest house, which was meant to house the refugees. It had been rumored for months that these buildings would be given up to house refugees. There was widespread protest once morest this.
Then the Integration Department came forward in mid-December stating that no decision has been taken to release this building for refugees. Even following the fire, the department reiterated the same position.
The Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) has condemned the arson of homeless and asylum seekers. DRHE said that this is a very disappointing incident.
Concerned Prime Minister and leaders
Prime Minister Leo Varadkar expressed concern over the incident. The Prime Minister said in a statement that there were no casualties. A garda investigation will determine the cause of the fire. Varadkar also said that if the fire was set deliberately, the culprits would be brought to justice.
Anyone who knows anything regarding this should pass it on to the gardaí. Varadkar also stated that the building and its premises are intended to be used as emergency accommodation. Justice Minister Helen McEndy reiterated the same position and said that strict action will be taken once morest the perpetrators. This is a very serious crime. No one has the right to destroy the public or threaten the public, the minister said.
