refractories will have to pay a supplement from January 1

From January 1, 2023, people who have refused the installation of a Linky meter will have to pay an additional fee, at least in theory, reports Challenges.

It is a device that has unleashed passions and provoked a long debate in recent years. The Linky electricity meter allows the transmission of consumption data directly to the supplier, without going through a traditional manual reading.

Except that the system was rejected by some subscribers who denounced alleged dangers linked to the waves or an invasion of privacy. They should nevertheless be forced to pay a supplement to their electricity subscription from January 1, recalls Challenges in mid-December.

Although the deployment of Linky meters officially ended in 2021 in France, around 10% of installations, or 3.8 million households, did not experience the transition. The Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) had acted last February that refractories will have to pay out of pocket for future meter reading costs. From January 2023, it will therefore cost them 61 euros per year, or just over 5 euros per month. However, this additional cost only concerns households that have refused the installation of the meter. When this installation was impossible for technical reasons, no additional charge will be applied.

Two years of respite?

In fact, it will nevertheless be quite easy for the subscribers concerned to avoid paying, at least initially. The rule enacted by CRE provides that they can take the reading themselves and send it to Enedis for two years. But from January 1, 2025, it will be necessary to choose between the installation of the meter or the definitive increase on the bill.
