Myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism are the most common visual disorders among Brazilians. In fact, vision problems as a whole affect a large part of the population. An IBGE survey showed that more than 35 million people suffer from some condition, a number that represents almost 19% of the population. In these cases, refractive surgery may be a treatment option.

Refractive surgery is a procedure that reshapes the cornea with the help of a laser to correct visual problems related to refraction. This is the case with myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, for example.

According to Breno Marques, ophthalmologist at Hospital de Olhos de Cuiabá (HOC), the procedure reduces or even eliminates the need for glasses or the use of contact lenses in everyday life.

Who can do it?

According to the doctor, laser refractive surgery is recommended for people who want to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Additionally, patients must meet the following criteria:

Be over 21 years old; Refraction (“degree”) stable for at least one year; Cornea with adequate curvature and thickness for surgery (complementary exams such as corneal tomography are essential in this evaluation).

“Refractive surgery is not recommended for children, as their eyeglass prescriptions may change as they grow, as can the curvature and thickness of the cornea. It is important that the vision is stabilized before considering the procedure”, reinforces the specialist.
