Reforms to the Sports Law stall in Congress

The future of national athletes for representation in the Olympic games is unclear. The bill that seemed to be a way out is now stalled in Congress and was not even included in the session proposals for this week.

The above occurs because there are issues pending to be analyzed in the proposal, at least that is what representative Karina Paz, secretary of the Board of Directors of Congress, said.

“That initiative is not yet going to be part of this week’s agenda. Let’s learn more regarding the content of that initiative and what the urgency is. We have to see what progress the president made with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), ”he commented.

The IOC suspended Guatemala for the way Jorge Rodas, current president of the Guatemalan Olympic Committee (COG), was elected. This means that Guatemalan athletes cannot participate as country representatives.

The initiative that might provide a solution was ruled favorably last week, but in the opinion of Deputy Paz, the law alone would not provide a total answer.

“I consider that the bill alone is not enough. We must also see the legality of this bill. We have a legal framework and a current Sports law, I believe that express rulings should not be made,” he noted.

Rhodes arrives at Congress

The president of the COG arrived at the Congress of the Republic this Monday, March 4, to ask a representative for support. He is seeking a meeting with the President of the Republic Bernardo Arévalo.

“We continue with the intention of meeting with him –Arévalo– and having an immediate solution to the problem with the suspension,” said Rodas.

Without any warning, Rodas arrived at the office of representative Alma Luz Guerrero, elected by Movimiento Semilla. The congresswoman was part of the Basketball Federation, from where she was expelled for alleged mismanagement of funds.

Rodas was elusive when asked regarding the current crisis that surrounds him and that harms athletes, without responding directly regarding a possible resignation from his position or raising actions that they have in the Constitutional Court (CC).

“I believe that the processes have been carried out as the law stipulates. We have been respectful from day one. The CC has already issued a ruling, which favored us and we have acted on it, with the legal basis,” he concluded.

Representative Guerrero gave her version of the meeting with Rodas, saying that she actually asked him for help. “He came to ask for support so that I might intercede with the president so that he would listen to them, that was only what we talked regarding, we did not go into more things,” she said.

He denied any possible friendship with Rodas, saying that he did not know him, but he received him without prior appointment. “We have a relationship with all the officials, and it is the first time we have seen it,” he said.
