Río Blanco, Mexico.- In memory of the martyrs of Río Blanco, Veracruz, workers who rioted in front of the yarn factory in 1907, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador promised that he will order two reforms: one so that the increase in wages is not below inflation and that pensions are fair.
“Here I make the commitment that before I leave I will send a reform initiative to Article 123 of the Constitution, so that it is established that the salary will never increase less than inflation,” launched the federal President.
“We are going to continue with that policy, and I also make the commitment to you, the teachers union and other workers raised it with me. We are going to review Zedillo’s labor counter-reform, that of pensions. We are going to make a proposal because it is completely inhumane.” “Unfair, that a worker following 30 years of working when he finishes does not even receive – because that is what this reform is like – his salary when he was active, but rather half – if he is doing well – of that salary,” he said to applause.
López Obrador, surrounded by leaders of the old unionism, claimed that in recent years the purchasing power of the population has been lost.
“That is not going to continue, the oligarchy, in 36 years there was a loss in the purchasing power of the minimum wage of 70 percent.
“So much so that, in 1980, the minimum wage was enough to buy 50 kilos of tortilla. When we became President, the minimum wage was barely enough to buy five kilos of tortilla and, although we have increased the minimum wage, barely and now a minimum wage is enough to buy 10 kilos of tortilla.
“Look how much the purchasing power of the salary has deteriorated, that is why we have to continue with the same salary policy. And here I make the commitment that before the end of my term I will send an initiative to reform Article 123 of the Constitution, to that it be established that wages will never increase less than inflation, never once more.”
In Río Blanco, the President received complaints regarding missing people, basifications in the health sector and lack of support for sugar producers.
At the stage, López Obrador greeted the leader of the oil union, Ricardo Aldana, and Isaías González Cuevas of the CROC, both of whom have been strengthened in their unions since PRI six-year terms.
