As part of the symposium of successful graduates of the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, Dr. Miguel Ángel Mercado Díaz, director of Surgery of the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition “Salvador Zubirán” was present. and president of the Mexican Academy of Surgery, who gave the talk, “Reflections on 1000 reconstructions in the bile ducts.”
He explained that he chose this topic since it is what he has been doing for a long time, “in particular, I chose it because it is what I have been doing since I returned from abroad when I did a postgraduate course, regarding how the reconstruction of bile ducts”.
He stressed that despite the fact that this operation is probably the most common in the country, due to different situations, such as anatomical issues, or because of the inflammatory process of the gallbladder, the bile duct is sectioned and when sectioned, it is incompatible with the life”.
Dr. Miguel Ángel Mercado pointed out that when these processes occur, they are temporarily left with fistulas, “for which reason I have dedicated myself to reconstructing them; I managed to make the ‘Salvador Zubirán’ Institute a concentration center, because fortunately it is not a frequent problem, it occurs one to three times in each cholecystectomy”.
He also said that it is not a frequent health problem, but the patient who suffers from this type of injury, his deterioration in quality of life is extraordinarily critical.
Regarding the procedure for this type of reconstruction, he explained that this operation can be considered unnatural, because the small intestine is attached to the bile ducts.
“It is a situation that does not resemble normal anatomical conditions at all, but it is the only option. I have been performing this type of operation for 30 years, resulting in 1,000 bile duct reconstructions”.
Dr. Mercado Díaz expressed his pleasure at being able to mention that the experience they have at the “Salvador Zubirán” National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition is unique. “In the United States, there are probably fewer injuries and there are more hospital centers that can perform this type of surgery; so the experience they have there does not exceed 200 cases, and we have 1,000 cases.”
Finally, he recalled his student years at the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí since he belongs to the 1973-1979 generation. “It is a university that I love very much, with an extraordinary level and the best thing that has happened to me in my life, is being a graduate of this Faculty”.
