Referee Probed Over Claims of Discussing Yellow Card Bets Before Match

The Whistle Blower: FA Investigates Referee David Coote Over Questionable Yellow Card

Ah, the beautiful game, where the only thing more scandalous than a badly timed slide tackle is a referee with a suspiciously wagging finger. Or, in this case, a finger that may have been motivated by more than just a player’s misbehavior on the pitch. Enter David Coote, the referee at the center of a rather unsavory controversy that’s got everyone from Leeds to the FA asking, "What’s the story, mate?"

According to The Sun, Coote, who was officiating a match between Leeds and West Brom in October 2019, may have had a vested interest in handing out a yellow card to then-Leeds player Ezgjan Alioski. It’s alleged that Coote had a bit of a chinwag with a friend before the match, discussing the possibility of Alioski getting booked. And, wouldn’t you know it, Alioski ended up being the proud owner of a shiny new yellow card by the end of the game.

But here’s the kicker: Coote is said to have messaged his friend after the match, saying, "I hope you backed as discussed." Now, we’re not ones to jump to conclusions, but it sounds an awful lot like Coote may have been, ahem, "influenced" by something other than his diligent refereeing skills.

Now, we know what you’re thinking: "What’s the big deal? It’s just a yellow card!" Ah, but my friends, this is where it gets serious. The FA takes allegations of match-fixing and refereeing impropriety very, very seriously. In fact, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) – the organization that oversees referees in the top tiers of English football – has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to breaches of its integrity code of conduct.

And, it seems, Coote is already in a bit of hot water. He’s currently suspended and facing a disciplinary process from PGMOL, which is separate from the FA’s investigation into this latest scandal.

When questioned about the allegations, Coote denied any wrongdoing. Fair enough, but we can’t help but wonder: if he’s got nothing to hide, why did he feel the need to message his friend about it in the first place?

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for PGMOL chimed in, saying, "The facts need to be established in light of these very serious allegations." You can’t say fairer than that, really. After all, it’s not every day you hear about a referee potentially being in cahoots with his mates.

And, just in case you were wondering, Leeds United are aware of the allegations but are declining to comment at this time.

The investigation is ongoing, but one thing’s for sure: this is one scandal that’s got everyone in the football world talking.

What do you think about the allegations against David Coote? Do you think the FA should come down hard on him if he’s found guilty, or do you think it’s all just a big misunderstanding?

Let us know in the comments below.

The Football Association has launched a thorough investigation into a serious allegation that referee David Coote engaged in a pre-match discussion regarding the issuance of a yellow card during a 2019 encounter between Leeds and West Brom, sparking concerns over potential match-fixing.

The Sun newspaper has revealed that Coote allegedly booked then-Leeds player Ezgjan Alioski in the match, which took place in October 2019, and subsequently sent a message to a friend stating “I hope you backed as discussed”, fuelling speculation about the referee’s impartiality and potential involvement in illicit activities.

However, Coote vehemently denies any wrongdoing, sources close to the referee claim, as he faces intense scrutiny over his actions, which, if proven, would be a clear breach of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited’s (PGMOL) integrity code of conduct.

A spokesperson for PGMOL told Sky Sports News: “The allegations are extremely serious and require a thorough examination of the facts to determine the truth, in light of which we will take swift and decisive action if any misconduct is proven, as we maintain a zero-tolerance approach to any breach of our integrity code of conduct, which all match officials are mandated to sign annually.

“David Coote has been suspended and is subject to a separate ongoing disciplinary process by PGMOL, which will run concurrently with the FA’s independent investigation, allowing for a comprehensive examination of the circumstances surrounding the allegations and ensuring that justice is served should any wrongdoing be uncovered.

“The PGMOL board is resolute in its commitment to upholding the integrity of the game and will not hesitate to impose sanctions if these allegations are substantiated, but we will not comment further on this matter at this time.”

A spokesperson for the FA told Sky Sports News: “These allegations are grave and warrant immediate attention, and we are investigating this matter with utmost urgency to determine the facts and take the necessary actions to protect the integrity of the sport.”
