A medical study found that regular use of the Internet can reduce the risk of dementia among the elderly, in promising results that show the positive effects of using the Internet amid the prevailing talk regarding the negative aspects of its use.

According the studyResearchers at the New York University School of Global Public Health tracked data on regarding 20,000 people without dementia, between the ages of 50 and 65, for up to 17 years.

Every two years, during that period, the surveyors asked participants how regularly they used the Internet and 65 percent said they did.

The published results showed that regular use of the Internet was associated with regarding half the risk of developing dementia compared to irregular use. The lowest risk was among adults who used the Internet one to two hours per day.

Regular use of the Internet for longer periods was associated with delayed cognitive impairment, but the study emphasized the need for more studies on the potential harmful effects of excessive Internet use.
