According to a study published in the scientific journal PLOS One, nose picking can more than triple the risk of contracting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Researchers at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands surveyed 404 medical workers at a medical center regarding their nose-touching habits.

A total of 219 people responded to the questionnaire, and the researchers monitored them for COVID-19 infection. Regular antibody tests were conducted to determine whether they had been exposed to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and they also conducted their own COVID-19 tests.

After 12 to 18 months of monitoring, health care workers were asked regarding their nose-picking habits and whether they had been exposed to COVID-19 through co-workers or outside contacts with COVID-19 symptoms.

Of the 219 health care workers, 185 said they had blown their nose at least once, and 17% of them were infected with COVID-19.

On the other hand, only 6% of 34 healthcare workers who answered that they had never cleared their nose were infected with Corona 19.

People who have blown their nose are 3.8 times more likely to be infected with Corona 19 than those who have not.

“Washing your hands does not completely prevent contamination,” Dr. Joseph Eiser warned. “When you pick your nose, you often scratch the mucous membranes with your fingernails. Scratching the mucous membranes or pulling out ingrown hairs can cause serious infection.” did.
