Reducing Risk Factors for Degenerative Diseases – Lifestyle Habits to Prevent Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Vascular Dementia

It is important to reduce risk factors for degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and vascular dementia by improving lifestyle habits.

As the Netflix movie ‘Secret of Secrets’ has recently become popular, interest in the illness of the main character, Detective Sami Kearce, is also increasing. Detective Sami is a veteran detective, but he is a deeply troubled person as he frequently loses consciousness unexpectedly. He becomes confused when he is diagnosed with a degenerative brain disease at the hospital.

According to the medical community on the 15th, major degenerative brain diseases include vascular dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Lewy body dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease, commonly called dementia, is a representative degenerative brain disease. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for approximately 60-70% of all dementias.

Alzheimer’s is a disease in which abnormal proteins such as amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles accumulate in the brain, destroying brain cells and reducing brain tissue, thereby reducing brain function.

Not only does Alzheimer’s cause a decline in memory and language skills, but as it progresses, judgment and sense of direction are lost, and personality changes occur. Eventually, patients lose the ability to take care of themselves and must receive help from others.

Vascular dementia refers to cases where dementia symptoms occur due to a stroke. This accounts for approximately 20-30% of all dementia cases.

It is known that vascular dementia is prevalent in Asians, including Koreans. Patients with vascular dementia often have diseases that cause vascular diseases, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, angina, myocardial infarction, cardiac arrhythmia, and smoking.

The University Dementia Society said, “In actual clinical practice, there are many cases where the two cannot be clearly distinguished,” adding, “Alzheimer’s disease is often accompanied by vascular lesions, and vascular dementia also often has Alzheimer’s pathological findings, so mixed dementia is called mixed dementia.” “Some scholars claim that it is the most common cause of dementia,” he explained.

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common degenerative disease following Alzheimer’s, with a prevalence of more than 1% in people over 60 years of age. Parkinson’s disease is accompanied by not only motor disorders such as tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and gait disorders, but also non-motor symptoms such as cognitive impairment, depression, hallucinations, and autonomic dysfunction.

Parkinson’s disease occurs when dopamine cells in an area called the substantia nigra of the midbrain gradually decrease. The reason for these changes in the substantia nigra is not yet clearly known. When the exact cause of the disease is unknown, it is called ‘idiopathic’. Most cases of Parkinson’s disease are idiopathic Parkinson’s disease.

Dementia with Lewy bodies is characterized by the widespread occurrence of eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (Lewy bodies) in the cerebrum.

The main symptoms of dementia with Lewy bodies include fluctuations in cognitive function, visual hallucinations, and Parkinson’s symptoms. Cognitive function fluctuations refer to daily decline in memory or spatial awareness. In Alzheimer’s, these symptoms appear in the late stages.

In Lewy body dementia, psychotic symptoms such as visual hallucinations or auditory hallucinations may appear from the early stages of the disease. A hallucination is something you see when in reality there is nothing there.

Although a sure way to prevent degenerative brain disease is not yet known, risk factors can be reduced by improving lifestyle habits. Detective Sami is also participating in an alcoholism treatment group in the film.

A medical official said, “Several studies have proven that avoiding excessive drinking and smoking and exercising appropriately lowers the risk of dementia,” and added, “A balanced diet and active brain activity such as reading, playing musical instruments, and outdoor activities can also prevent degenerative diseases such as choimae.” “It helps,” he said.
