Reducing Depression in Women: The Power of Regular Aerobic Exercise

Studies have shown that regular aerobic exercise lowers the risk of depression in women.

Recently, the National Institute of Health of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) analyzed data from the Korea Genetic Epidemiology Survey (KoGES) and published a study showing that regular moderate-intensity aerobic exercise lowered the risk of depression in women by more than 30%.

The research team calculated the average aerobic physical activity time per week of 3,967 adults in their 50s to 80s for 4 years and followed them.

As a result, women who practiced moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity for 150 minutes or more per week, as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), had a 33% reduction in the incidence of depression.

For women who did more than 300 minutes of aerobic physical activity per week, the risk was reduced by 44%. Moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity is ‘physical activity that makes you sweat or run out of breath, but allows you to have a conversation with the person next to you’.

In men, no significant correlation was observed between physical activity and depression. In addition, resistance exercise (strength exercise) was not effective in preventing depression in both men and women when the weekly recommended hours of aerobic physical activity were not met.

The research team explained the meaning, saying, “The results of each study differed in whether there was a gender difference in the preventive effect of the recommended physical activity, and there are few studies that have identified whether the preventive effect increases proportionately as the amount of activity increases.”

The study was published in the international journal ‘Public Health Frontiers’ in the field of public health.
