Public transport companies should review the remuneration of bus drivers, which would reduce their deficit by half, according to the Montreal Economic Institute (MEI).

While Quebec complains regarding having to absorb the deficits of companies in the transport sector, the proposal to reduce the remuneration of bus drivers to a level comparable to those of jobs in this category might reduce expenses by $250 million, estimated the Institute on Monday.

“Just by reviewing the remuneration of bus drivers, the large public transport companies might eliminate half of their annual deficit,” Renaud Brossard, senior director of communications at the MEI, indicated on Monday.

The large cities of Quebec anticipate a deficit for transport companies of $532 million for next year, at a time when the Legault government figures this deficit at $376.4 million.

The Institute of Statistics of Quebec observed that public transport bus drivers and metro operators have the highest overall remuneration among jobs accessible with a fifth secondary diploma.

In fact, the average hourly rate of bus drivers and metro operators is $51.02, which represents an average remuneration of $106,652 per year, according to the same organization.

On the other hand, other employees working in the same job category benefited in 2022 from an average salary of $35.74 per hour, when we make the adjustment for the non-standard remuneration of bus drivers, according to MEI calculations.

“Before threatening to drastically cut bus frequency or metro opening hours, transportation companies should spend our money responsibly,” suggested Mr. Brossard.
