Apple may finally adopt a new generation of screens with the launch of the iPhone 16, which should start using the OLED M14 material. This technology, according to new rumors released by the leaker Revegnus this Tuesday (14), might be used by two generations of the cell phone and be reused on the iPhone 17.
According to a publication made by the leaker on X (formerly Twitter), the manufacturer will use the same type of OLED material for two generations of iPhone. After using the M12 OLED in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15, it is expected that the next lines — scheduled for 2024 and 2025 — will be equipped with the new M14 OLED, ensuring significant efficiency improvements.
“M14” refers to a standard of materials used in OLED panels. With each generation, these materials evolve to ensure improved color accuracy, brightness capability and power efficiency to the screens that are usually used on cell phones and tablets. You can expect these types of improvements for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17.
Using the same generation of screens for two generations of cell phones is a way to balance production costs. A report points out that the iPhone 15 Pro Max costs $37 more than the iPhone 14 Pro Max to produce, and if Apple does not “recycle” the screen material, this value might be higher, leading to an increase in the price of the model.
Samsung is one of Apple’s main screen suppliers, followed by LG and BOE, and despite having an advantage in producing this part internally, it is possible that the South Korean giant will adopt the same cost reduction strategy and reuse the OLED M13 on the Galaxy S24, according to Revegnuswhich might give an advantage to its rival.
