According to Flemish Minister of the Environment Zuhal Demir (N-VA), no less than 7 Belgian ministers, 16 cabinet members, a large number of civil servants and 150 other people are currently scheduled to represent Belgium in Dubai from November 30 to December 12th. She urges her colleagues from the country’s other governments on Wednesday to reduce the Belgian delegation to the next COP-28 on climate to what is strictly necessary.

“If the political world wants to maintain its credibility with the population, it must not participate in this puppet theater and focus instead on the essential, namely (concrete) achievements on the ground,” said the nationalist minister on Wednesday. in a press release.

According to Ms. Demir, only the Brussels Minister of the Environment, Alain Maron (Ecolo), is in reality called upon to play a formal role during this COP, by virtue of the rotation agreed between the country’s entities to represent Belgium.

Mrs Demir will therefore not go to Dubai. Flanders will only send a few experts there to support Minister Maron and ensure that he faithfully defends the points of view agreed between the Belgian entities during climate negotiations, she adds.

The Flemish minister assures that her attitude should in no way imply any denial of global warming.

During COP-27 in Egypt last year, the Belgian delegation numbered 120 people, she recalls. However, only a minister, supported by a few experts, had a formal role. “All the others were there mainly only to take selfies and to have bilateral meetings,” laments Ms. Demir.
