Indeed, in this report published on Wednesday July 26, the ANSM notes that between 2000 and 2019, the number of antibiotic substances for systemic use, alone or in combination, marketed is down by more than 20%. In the city, “The overall consumption of antibiotics in France has thus increased from 194 to 139 million boxes (including 174 and 121 million respectively passing through the pharmacy circuit)”, during this same period.

However, this drop is mainly cumulative over the periods 2000 to 2004 and 2016 to 2019. The report thus notes a 22% reduction in the consumption of antibiotics in France between 2000 and 2004, a period during which the health insurance campaign once morest the overconsumption of this type of drug mobilizes people. Between 2005 and 2016, consumption stabilized, varying by a maximum of 7% from one year to the next.

From 2016, a new decline began. Estimated around 8.5%, it would be mainly caused by the announcement of several ministerial measures to limit the use of antibiotics. Health professionals are particularly aware of better prescribing of these drugs. At this time, it is estimated that 12,500 deaths are linked to an infection with bacteria resistant to antibiotics.
