“Reduce Your Risk of Death: The Benefits of Aerobic and Muscle-Strengthening Exercise”

Muscle-strengthening exercise 7 or more times a week, risk of death by 42%

You can sometimes see people who cling to muscle exercises as if they are addicted. Doing too many muscle-strengthening exercises can increase your risk of death.

A study found that combining aerobic exercise with muscle exercise lowered the risk of dying from pneumonia or flu by 48%.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) research team revealed that this was the result of follow-up (regarding 9.2 years) of 577,909 adults who participated in the National Health Interview Survey from 1998 to 2018.

As a result of the study, it was found that those who met all of the US guidelines for aerobic exercise and muscle-strengthening activities had a 48% lower risk of dying from pneumonia and flu (influenza) than those who did not. These guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week and at least two muscle-strengthening (strengthening) exercises per week.

According to the results of the study, people who engaged in vigorous physical activity, such as moderate or high-intensity exercise, for 10 to 149 minutes a week had a 21% lower risk of dying from pneumonia or flu than those who did not. People who were physically active for 301 to 600 minutes a week had a 50% lower risk of dying from pneumonia or flu.

The risk of death was no longer lower for those who were physically active for more than 600 minutes a week. In addition, those who did muscle-strengthening exercises twice a week had a 47% lower risk of dying from pneumonia or flu than those who did muscle-strengthening exercises less than twice a week.

However, those who did muscle-strengthening exercises seven or more times a week had a 41% higher risk of dying from pneumonia or flu. I think we should take it as a warning that too much exercise or food that is said to be good for health can act as a ‘toxin’ in the body.

Of the study participants, 52% were female and 69% were white. During follow-up, 81,431 people died, 1516 of whom died from pneumonia and flu. About 51% did not meet the guideline’s weekly goal, and only 19% met the criteria for aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercise.

The research team said, “Regular and appropriate physical activity such as exercise helps to lower the incidence of complications such as stroke and coronary heart disease, which increase the risk of death in people hospitalized with pneumonia.”

The results of this study (Leisure-time physical activity and mortality from influenza and pneumonia: a cohort study of 577 909 US adults) were published in the British Journal of Sports.
