Reduce Your Risk of Brain Tumors: Tips from Oncologist Alexander Syriakov

2023-06-09 12:31:47

Professor Alexander Syriakov, an oncologist, announced that smoking and alcoholic beverages increase the risk of developing brain tumors by 30 percent.

In an interview with the Izvestia newspaper, on the occasion of the World Day Against Brain Tumors, which falls on June 8, the specialist indicates that these tumors can be benign or malignant. Malignant tumors are characterized by their rapid growth in tissues and they also give metastases.

And he says: “If we talk regarding the prevention of these tumors, then above all, a healthy lifestyle must be followed, which includes moderate physical activity, sufficient rest, and giving up bad habits (for those who smoke cigarettes and abuse alcohol, the risk of developing brain tumors increases by approximately 30 percent). Eat enough fruits and vegetables and avoid stressful situations as much as possible.

According to him, symptoms that may indicate a brain tumor are headache, vomiting not related to eating, dizziness, convulsions, epileptic seizures, muscle weakness, tension, hearing impairment, vision problems, and auditory and taste hallucinations.

He says, “In addition, psychological disorders may occur, showing aggression, euphoria, unexplained cheerfulness, or apathy. A person may also suffer from visual hallucinations, memory and attention disorders, and thinking problems.”

The specialist points out that benign brain tumors are small in size, grow slowly, and are easy to eradicate, which increases the average age of the patient by 10 years or more. In the case of malignant tumors, the average age of the patient does not exceed one year. But younger patients have a much better chance of survival.
