Editor’s note: Lily, the moderator of “Lili’s Nordic Life”, used to be a media executive. She loves her job, but she is also exhausted by her busy life. At the age of 43, she made up her mind to start the second half of her life in Sweden. There, she tried to practice slowing down her pace and relearning to eat well and live well.
If she hadn’t read that book, Lily might not have started the second half of her life so quickly.
Lily, who lives in Sweden, is the moderator of the Facebook page “Lili’s Nordic Life”. She used to be a well-known media executive, and her clients were all major global brands. She has a strong working ability and works very hard. She works 12 to 15 hours a day, and was even so busy that she had no time to take out the garbage at home for 6 months. “My mother told me, you might as well put a tent in the company parking lot and live there!” Lily smiled wryly, “Work makes me enjoy, but it also makes me work hard.”
By chance, she bought the book “Repacking Your Bags” in a bookstore.“When I opened the book and saw the first sentence, tears came down. It said ‘does all of this make you happy?'”Although work brings a sense of accomplishment and generous rewards, she knows that she is actually very tired. “From that moment on, I began to think regarding what kind of life I wanted to live. I wanted to stop, I didn’t want all of this.”
So, Lily asked her Japanese boss to resign. Worried that her boss suggested that she take a long vacation before coming back, she simply told her boss that she was leaving Taiwan and getting married. “But I didn’t know who I was going to marry at the time.” She smiled mischievously.
After leaving the workplace in 2013, she flew to Northern Europe to find friends. One month later, she met her current husband “Old Tang” by chance, and soon decided to get married. During this period of “big break” for herself, she traveled to Cuba and Greece, and also visited her classmates in the UK, enjoying every day of visiting art galleries and reading newspapers leisurely. In November 2017, she officially moved to Sweden to settle down and start a new life.
After leaving Taiwan, Lily relearned how to enjoy nature and enjoy life in a new environment.
Delete your own to-do list, learn to focus on the present and live a good life
In Sweden, Lily lives at a very different pace than in the past. Now, while running a community and selecting brands, she goes to school every morning to learn Swedish, and in the followingnoon to do homework and go to the gym. She already knows how to leave blank space for her life.
She still keeps the handbook she used when she lived in Taipei, and when she flips through a page, she always remembers her itinerary.“I like Taipei very much. It’s a place I’m familiar with. But Taipei can’t stop me because I have many friends.”She lives seriously and enjoys spending time with friends. On weekends, if she is not working overtime at the company, she is going out with friends, and her schedule is always full.
When she first arrived in Sweden, she also arranged various activities for herself. “I often say “I need to do this. I must to do this.』But my husband said, there is no one thing must do。“Mr., with a relaxed personality, became one of the forces that slowed Lily down.“I admire his philosophy of life. He often said that work is not the whole of life. You should enjoy every moment and don’t think regarding tomorrow. When you are tired, go to rest.”
Aware of her anxiety, she slowly deleted the to-do items on the calendar one by one.
