The project to redevelop the Saint-Gilles barrier, an important crossroads in the Brussels municipality, and Avenue du Parc will enter the public inquiry on September 24, the Brussels Mobility regional agency, in charge of the file, announced on Friday. .

The announced objectives of the Brussels Region are multiple: “Improve road safety, calm car traffic, improve the quality of public space, maximize biodiversity and integrate efficient rainwater management systems”. The municipality of Saint-Gilles also plans for this project to be integrated into its future “Cool Move” traffic plan, presented last June.

Brussels Mobility’s plans include a complete restructuring of the Saint-Gilles barrier, a roundregarding around seven road axes. The tram rails, which until now surrounded the statue of the Water Carrier, will now cross the intersection in its center while the statue will be moved to the north of the roundregarding.

The sidewalks will be widened and the width of the road will be reduced to prevent two cars from driving side by side. Chaussée de Waterloo, rue de l’Hôtel des Monnaies and the narrows of avenue du Parc will also be made one-way when approaching the crossroads, with the aim of making public transport more fluid.

Parc Avenue, from Forest Park to the barrier, will be transformed to accommodate trees next to the sidewalks. Separate cycle paths will be provided on three sections deemed dangerous while the rest of the avenue, without a path, will become a cycle street. Wider sidewalks will also be planned.
