The redevelopment of the Saint-Gilles barrier and, more broadly, of Avenue du Parc from Parc de Forest to the barrier will profoundly change the face of one of the biggest points of mobility in Brussels. The project to redevelop Avenue du Parc, from Forest Park, and the Saint-Gilles barrier will be up for public inquiry from September 24, announced Bruxelles-Mobilité this morning.

Concretely, “the tram rails will now cross the intersection in the center. The statue of the Water Carrier will be slightly off-center, at the intersection of the Chaussée de Waterloo, Rue de l’Hôtel des Monnaies and Rue Théodore Verhaegen. The sidewalks will be widened and the width of the road reduced so as not to allow two cars to drive side by side, one of the main causes of accidents currently at this intersection. Vegetation will be integrated wherever possible. The developments will reinforce the roundregarding character of the Barrière and will thus clarify the priority regime for motorists,” explains Bruxelles-Mobilité. Which aims here for a “global calming of the roundregarding and a smoother flow of public transport” thanks, once more, to “making the Chaussée de Waterloo, the Rue Hôtel des Moines and the gully of Avenue du Parc one-way.” ”.
The entire avenue du Parc is a cycle street
Separate cycle paths will be set up on the most dangerous sections, namely “uphill between Rochefort and Avenue Clémentine, in the gully approaching La Barrière, downhill when approaching Rochefort”. Cyclists will, however, share the road with cars on the rest of the avenue which will become a cycle street. Furthermore, “the bottleneck of Avenue du Parc will pass in one direction in the direction of La Barrière towards Rue de la Perche. Tram stops will be moved while all tram rails in the area will be replaced.
Saint-Gilles unveils its mobility plan
With this project, the Minister of Mobility Elke Van den Brandt (Ecolo) ensures that “residents of the densely populated district around the Barrière and Avenue du Parc will soon benefit from a greenway which will lead them directly to the park de Forest.” The municipality of Saint-Gilles specifies for its part that “this project is a first concrete step towards a Barrier which will include different one-way traffic loops aimed at reducing transit traffic crossing Saint-Gilles”. The first announcement of a redevelopment of the Saint-Gilles barrier was made more than ten years ago.

The project is under public inquiry until October 23. Detailed plans can be viewed on the website openpermit.brussels. An information meeting will take place for local residents on October 11 (6 p.m. at Les Filles de Marie school). Other consultation meetings will be organized by the municipality during the months of October and November concerning the new peaceful neighborhood, of which this project is a part.
