Redevelopment of Brussels Stock Exchange District: A Complete Transformation of the City Center

2023-09-19 09:10:40

The planning permit for the complete redevelopment of the surroundings of the Brussels Stock Exchange was issued on Tuesday. This is what the Brussels State Secretariat for Urban Planning and Heritage Ans Persoons (Vooruit.brussels) reports. This time, it is the streets of la Bourse, Maus, du Midi and Tabora which will be taken care of.

The new development is part of the City of Brussels’ ambition to beautify and renovate the city center. “Thanks to this redevelopment, the Bourse will truly become the heart of the city center, creating an axis running from the Grand-Place to Place Sainte-Catherine,” Mr. Persoons said in a press release.

The renovation of the Bourse district is the final agreement of the works on the pedestrian zone, which began in 2017. “In this way, we are also completing one of the most ambitious public space renovation projects of these last decades in Brussels. The area around the Stock Exchange will now be an integral part of the pedestrian zone,” Ms Persoons said with pride.

The work will begin in October and will be divided into several phases, “including a break to give way to winter fun,” explains Anaïs Maes, alderman in charge of Urban Planning and Public Space in Brussels City.

Exchange Square and the Exchange Building are located in the heart of the Pentagon and are protected as a landscape. In addition, the square as a whole is part of the UNESCO perimeter around the Grande Place. The planning permit for the redevelopment of the area around the Stock Exchange was issued on November 6, 2017 as part of the work on the pedestrian zone by Beliris.

Completion of the work is scheduled for spring 2024.
