STIB and Brussels Mobility have submitted an application for planning permission to redevelop a section of nearly one km of Chaussée de Neerstalle, a black spot for traffic, in particular public transport, to the south of the capital.
The request will soon be submitted to a public inquiry. The work is scheduled for the end of next year.
The imposed replacement of tram rails due to their obsolescence will be used to propose changes intended to improve the commercial speed of tram lines, which is particularly problematic on this section, to avoid transit traffic on local roads and to increase the comfort of public space for users, Brussels Mobility said in a press release on Tuesday. .
The stops will be adapted for people with reduced mobility. The soil will be desimpermeabilised to limit flooding. Sidewalks will be wider, pedestrian crossings made safer. The neighborhood will be greener.
The project consists of a facade-to-facade redevelopment with a one-way street on part of the carriageway, from rue des Polders to chaussée de Ruisbroek, heading north – chaussée de Ruisbroek. This one-way layout, with maintenance of a passage in both directions for cyclists, will create a clean half-site for trams to the south.
