The Carinthian Chamber of Labor election ended with significant losses for the social democratic trade unionists. Nevertheless, President Günther Goach’s FSG clearly retained its position as the strongest force with 69.3 percent. The Freedom Workers were able to make strong gains, reaching 18.6 percent. The Christian trade unionists lost slightly to 5.2 percent. The Green-affiliated Alternatives and Independent Trade Unionists gained a little to 3.1 percent.

The FSG, with its president in office since 2002, had to defend Austria’s best result of 77.6 percent in Carinthia. According to the results published following midnight, this failed with a loss of at least 8.3 percentage points. The Freedom Party with top candidate Manfred Mischelin, however, gained 5.5 points. The ÖAAB lost half a percentage point, bringing it back to the result of the penultimate election. The AUGE, which was halved five years ago, was now able to gain 0.5 percentage points once more.

The General List of Health Workers achieved a respectable success, falling just behind the alternative trade unionists at 2.9 percent when it first appeared. The trade union Left Bloc, however, had to be content with 0.9 percent. This roughly corresponded to the result from 2019 (minus 0.1 percentage points).

Voter turnout was flying low at around 32.5 percent, according to returning officer Maximilian Turrini. Five years ago it was 38.8 percent, in 2014 it was 40.8 percent. The final result will be known next Monday following all voting cards have been counted.

President Goach did not contest his losses, which amounted to a loss of six mandates. In a statement on the chamber’s homepage, he was pleased with the Social Democrats’ clear election victory. This is the clear mandate to continue to fight with full force for employee rights and, above all, for relief.

The ballot in Carinthia was the fourth as part of the 2024 Chamber of Labor election. The result of the FSG in Carinthia is still the best so far, even if only narrowly. In Salzburg, the Social Democrats had even increased their two-thirds majority to 68.9 percent. In the far west, the Christian trade unionists remained the strongest faction, albeit with losses. In Tyrol it was 59.2 percent, in Vorarlberg it was 42.4 percent.

The election is still ongoing in Upper Austria, where voting can take place until March 18th, Monday next week. From April 10th, elections will take place in the eastern region, with Styria completing the vote, where voting begins on April 16th and ends on the 29th of this month.
