BOSTON (AP) — The Red Sox placed lefty Chris Sale on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation Friday, another setback for the seven-time All-Star pitcher as he tries to re-establish himself as a reliable member of the rotation. .
A day after being pulled from a fourth-inning start, Sale told reporters that doctors weren’t sure what the injury was. However, he was confident that he would not require surgery.
Acknowledging his previous problems with injuries, he recalled that he has always bounced back and will once again.
The 34-year-old Sale, who hasn’t had an injury-free season since 2017, left his Thursday start against Cincinnati in the fourth inning after a couple of visits to the mound by the medical staff. He underwent an MRI on Friday morning and the team was awaiting the result.
“We don’t know where we are, but it’s possible he’s going to go on the disabled list,” Puerto Rican manager Alex Cora said before Friday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Sale has been on the disabled list in each of the previous five seasons, missing the 2020 season entirely while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
The team reinstated right-hander Corey Kluber from the paternity list to the payroll.
