An American warship and several commercial vessels were attacked in the Red Sea on Sunday, the Pentagon announced on NBC. It might be a major escalation in a series of maritime attacks in the Middle East linked to the war between Israel and Hamas.

“We are aware of reports of attacks on the USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available,” the Pentagon said. The Carney is an Arleigh Burke-class warship.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels said Sunday they had attacked two ships off the Yemeni coast, adding that “Israeli” ships were being targeted due to the war in Gaza. In a statement posted on social media, the Houthis said they carried out an “operation once morest two Israeli ships in the Bab al-Mandab Strait”, a strategic waterway linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, targeting the former with a “missile and the second ship with a drone”.

Maritime security company Ambrey announced on Sunday that a Bahamas-flagged British cargo ship was reportedly hit by rocket fire while in the Red Sea. The British maritime security agency UKMTO indicated that it had received a report concerning the activity of a drone, “including a potential explosion”, “near Bab el Mandeb coming from the direction of Yemen”.
