Red meat prices witnessed an unprecedented rise, reaching record levels in national markets, immediately after the end of the month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.

In this context, the price of one kilogram of lamb reached 130 dirhams, while the price of a kilogram of beef reached 90 dirhams, which raised Moroccan families’ fears about the impact of these increases on the prices of various types of livestock.

Social media users published blogs in which they expressed their dissatisfaction with the new increases, asking about their reasons, and about the quality of the measures and plans that the government says it has taken to contain this worsening situation for months.

According to the data provided by sector professionals, the real reasons behind these increases remain the drought that cast its shadow over the sector due to the absence of rainfall, and the high cost of animal feed despite the financial support provided by the government in this context in order to reduce the series of increases.

In this context, Abdel Haq Bocheshi, President of the National Association of Livestock Technologists, considered that the high prices of red meat are due to the inherent imbalance in supply and demand, as demand remains very high, which leads to high prices.

The spokesman stressed that lower prices are unthinkable in the current period, given that the stock of the national herd is very low and in continuous decline, especially with some slaughterhouses working to slaughter mares and ewes, which has affected the reproduction of the herd.
