Red meat prices continued to rise in Morocco with the return of activity following Eid al-Adha.

Two weeks following Eid al-Adha, slaughterhouses returned to work, but prices continued to rise significantly.

The price of a kilogram of beef in Casablanca yesterday reached 90 dirhams (wholesale price), while the price of lamb reached 110 dirhams.
According to Hicham Jawabri, regional secretary of the wholesale red meat traders in Casablanca, this increase is expected to continue in the coming days, especially with the arrival of Moroccans abroad and the approaching wedding season.

Jawabri called for urgent measures to stabilize the market, including supporting small farmers to improve the productivity of their livestock, and opening the way for other investors to import livestock, as it is an activity that is still the preserve of a few large investors.

The price hike is attributed to several main factors. First, supply shortage: The number of livestock available for slaughter has decreased due to drought and lack of feed, which has led to a decrease in supply in the markets. Second, increased demand: The demand for red meat increases during festive periods and special seasons, which increases pressure on prices. Third, increased production costs: The costs of feed, transportation and labor have increased, which has led to an increase in the cost of raising livestock.

This price increase is burdensome for consumers, especially those with limited income.

In this context, many citizens called on the government to take measures to reduce prices, such as increasing support for small farmers, combating monopolies, and encouraging investment in livestock farming.

Jawabri stressed that government intervention is necessary to achieve price stability, pointing out the importance of providing financial and technical support to small farmers to improve their productivity. He also called for opening the way for more investments in the livestock sector, with the aim of increasing supply and reducing dependence on large importers.

It is clear that the problem of high red meat prices in Morocco requires rapid and effective interventions by the relevant authorities to ensure market stability and ease the burden on consumers, especially in light of the difficult economic conditions experienced by many citizens.
