Taking root in the fertile soil of life, serving the masses at the grassroots level, and promoting literary and artistic innovation, the Ulan Muqi are attentive to the masses… Sunit Right Banner of the Xilingol League, where the country’s first Ulan Muqi was born.
On November 21, 2017, General Secretary Xi Jinping replied to the Ulan Muqi team members in Sunit Right Banner, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, calling on everyone to vigorously carry forward the fine traditions of the Ulan Muqi, take root in the fertile soil of life, serve the herdsmen, and promote literary and artistic innovation. Strive to create more excellent works that are down-to-earth, disseminated, and retained, and always be the “Red Literary Light Cavalry” on the grassland.
Yin Yin’s instructions are still in my ears, inspiring this team, especially the young Ulan Muqi team members, to keep their mission in mind, take root in the fertile soil, be honest and innovative, serve the people, sing for the people, and contribute to the all-round construction of a model autonomous region.” The power of the Red Literary Hussars.
Rooted in fertile soil, singing and dancing for the masses
“People’s problems are getting bigger than ever. I will take note of the people’s difficulties and provide medical insurance services accordingly. Every household will be satisfied. Only when the people are satisfied will happiness be achieved…”
Under the melodious music, three young members of the Wulan Muqi team sang the voices of the people and expressed their feelings. The team members performed with great devotion, and the crowd applauded continuously, and their emotions were deeply blended.
In summer and autumn, the Xilin Gol Prairie is full of flowers and endless green. This is also the busiest season for the Ulan Muqi team to perform.
Zana, captain of Wulan Muqi of Sunit Right Banner, said that Wulan Muqi means “red shoots” and symbolizes letting red culture take root and sprout, which requires the roots to be deeply rooted in the fertile soil of life and the hearts of the people.
“How to keep pace with the times, better convey the party’s voice and care to farmers and herdsmen, and enrich the cultural life of farmers and herdsmen, this is a question we have been thinking regarding. The concept we follow is Ulan Muqi The performance is for the people, and the team members and the people are closely connected. We travel regarding 5,000 kilometers a year, perform more than 100 times, and serve nearly 20,000 people,” Zana said.
“We have always asked young team members to draw materials from life, create high-quality products, and pursue classics. The creative process is a process of emotional exchange and integration with people of all ethnic groups, and a process of forging a strong sense of the Chinese nation’s community. In order to create a song that shows the unity of the nation and the family, For the theme song, our old, middle-aged and young team members went to the grassroots level, and following many times of collecting styles, digesting the material, deepening the meaning, and repeatedly revising it, we completed the creation of “Ode to Firm Faith”,” said Wang Lei, a young team member.
Since the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, this Ulan Muqi team has successively created and arranged “Zhu Ri He Qing”, “Ode of Firm Faith”, “Ode to the Party”, “Manai Ulan Muqi”, “Camel Homesickness”, “New “Youth of the Times” and more than 60 literary and artistic works soaked in the dew of life. These works are full of feelings regarding family and country, deeply reflect the people’s sincere feelings for the party in the new era, and use art to show the people of all ethnic groups in Inner Mongolia unite as one, help each other, and forge ahead on a new journey.
The young Ulan Muqi team member said that we must also keep pace with the times in the way we communicate. Once, following watching a performance, an audience member took their mobile phones and said to us: “The singing and dancing in the short videos and live broadcasts are beautiful and easy to watch. Do we, Wulan Muqi, want to try it?”
The young team members immediately thought, yes, now everyone uses their mobile phones to watch short videos and live broadcasts, and we should also keep up with the situation. So I quickly opened an account on the new media platform, set up mobile phones and cameras, shot literary and artistic works and short public welfare videos, and started live broadcasting performances on the Internet, gaining the attention and likes of netizens.
In this process, the young team members have accumulated rich creative experience. When creating, the team members also have standards in mind: whether the villagers can accept it, and whether they will nod or shake their heads following watching the show.
Gradually, the Ulan Muqi team members entered the hearts of the people. Everyone is willing to chat with the team members and sometimes provide good ideas for innovative works.
Zana said that over the years, our service formats have been continuously innovated, which stems from the cultural needs of the audience. These demands also enlighten us that Wulan Muqi must firmly root itself at the grassroots level and serve the grassroots level.
Keeping integrity and innovating, Ulan Muqi blooms with youth
At the Xilingol Ulan Muqi Art Festival, the lights came on on the stage, and the excellent play “Zhu Ri He Qing” performed by the youth members of the Ulan Muqi from Sunit Right Banner once once more met the local farmers and herdsmen.
The whole drama has ups and downs and the story is deeply touching: On Army Day, Zhurihe Grassland ushered in a grand military parade. Retired soldier Hu Xiaobing and herdsman Wulan Tuya met here and recalled their lives together. In my youth, how to protect Zhurihe grassland, how to forge deep friendship with herdsmen, how to cultivate the flower of national unity to be extremely beautiful…
Wonderful chapters continued on stage, and there was endless applause from the audience.
“”Zhu Ri He Qing” is an excellent play carefully created by three generations of old, middle and young members of the Sunit Right Banner Ulan Muqi team to build a strong sense of the Chinese nation’s community. It was selected as an outstanding play for the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Stage Art Quality Project in 2020.” Youth Uzbekistan Huang Xiaoyun, a member of Lanmu Cavalry, said.
The show won the award mainly due to its innovativeness. Innovation is reflected in many aspects such as script design, lighting and stage beauty, and expression techniques. This 5-act stage play is strung together with intertwined short stories, focusing on the theme of building a model autonomous region for the Chinese nation as a family, showing the feelings of the border soldiers in the new era of protecting their home and country, and expressing the deep feelings between soldiers and herdsmen.
“‘To be grounded, spread, and retained’ is our creative positioning,” said Zana. “‘Performance is collecting style, collecting style is creating’ is our creative philosophy and method.”
The young team members said that inspiration comes naturally when they communicate with the crowd while performing, and feel the local customs while watching the scenery. We often end a performance, chat with fellow villagers, and come up with inspiration. We look at the scenery and think of the theme. We write one or two verses of the score on the bus, and add it while walking and performing.
This creative method gives the work the artistic qualities of being down-to-earth and easy to spread. The classic work “Grassing Dance” originated from the grass gathering activities of herdsmen in their daily production. Every autumn, in order to solve the problem of winter feed for cattle and sheep, herdsmen will stock up on pasture, a process called “grasping.”
The team members incorporated this series of movements into the dance, expressing the joy of having plenty of food and clothing. Many herdsmen said while watching: “Aren’t we the ones acting here?”
In order to promote the new trend of the times, they created the sketch “Blind Date” to encourage herdsmen to drink less. At the end of the performance, the herdsmen surrounded the team members and gave a thumbs up happily: “You performed so well. We must drink less and do more in the future.”
“By approaching the villagers, we have a ruler to measure the works and a method to improve the level of creation. Performing at the grassroots level, the works can get direct feedback. The new works are constantly polished through the inspection of the villagers, and finally form a version that the audience likes to see.” Zana said.
Continue the struggle and lead the old to the new to pass on the baton
“The spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Party is glorious and bright, guiding us in the direction forward. Let us count the happy things on the road to happiness…”
Haolaibao’s “Ode to Firm Faith” is written by three generations of Ulan Mu, including Narendelige, Hairi, Wuyunjirigala, Arateng Taoges, Wuning, Sunbul, and Chaogbayar. The classic work jointly created by the cavalry members aims to integrate the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China into literary and artistic works, and spread it into the hearts of the people through the rap form of Haolaibao.
“Our team has always maintained a good style of guiding the old to the new and helping the new. From the first day they joined the team, the young team members have kept in mind the fine traditions of Wulan Muqi, always conveyed the party’s voice and care, and persisted in serving the people service and carry forward the spirit of dedication and innovation.” Zana said.
Wu Yinga, a member of the young Wulan Muqi team, agreed: “The good style of leading the new and guiding the new is permeated in many aspects such as thought leadership and program innovation, making our team always glowing with youthfulness.”
During the breaks in rehearsing song and dance programs, they often carry out the “Inheritance of Fire” literary and artistic learning and teaching activities. By telling “the glorious history of Wulan Muqi”, “the story of Wulan Muqi serving farmers and herdsmen” and “Ulan Muqi” Contents such as “Muqi’s Team Building” inspire young team members to innovate in their creations and inject red genes into their blood.
The young team members all said that as members of the Wulan Muqi in the new era, we will continue to keep up with the pace of the times, give full play to the role of the red literary and artistic light cavalry, take root in the fertile soil of life, serve the farmers and herdsmen, promote literary and artistic innovation, and serve with full enthusiasm. The masses contribute more and better spiritual food.
How to let the young Ulan Muqi team members exert their strength, play a leading role in the team, and make a difference? This team has set up various seminars and practical training grounds between performances, on the grasslands, in the fields, in front of and behind the houses of herdsmen… allowing young team members to speak freely.
“The performance method of the Wulan Mu Cavalry members is flexible. The seniors can mount and dismount their horses and perform. This tradition has continued since June 1957. Our new generation of members must carry forward the good tradition, find good content and good form, and let the common people It’s understandable and enjoyable to watch,” said Hu Sileng, a young Ulan Muqi member.
“Cultural identity is the deepest identity, the root of national unity and the soul of national harmony. As a banner of the national literary and artistic front, Wulan Muqi has gone through more than 60 years of history. The fine traditions formed and accumulated by Wulan Muqi The practical experience and the value of the times have become a precious spiritual wealth, inspiring the young team members to continue to strive.” Zana said.
