Research according to data, 57 percent the Americans would support the defense of the Baltic States in case of Russian aggression.
Linas Kojala, head of the Center for Eastern European Studies, who shared the data of this study on Facebook on Friday, says that such a result is encouraging.
“57 percent Americans respond positively, and this should be encouraging – the public’s position is a weighty element of formal obligations,” the political scientist wrote.
The research also distinguishes the views of republicans and democrats: 48 percent would support the defense of the Baltic countries, respectively. Republicans and 68 percent. democrats.
“It can be hypothesized that it is partly determined by circumstances, such as which party opposes the president. However, during almost a decade, when this question was asked in research, the trends remained similar, regardless of the results of the presidential elections”, wrote L. Kojala.
According to him, the Republicans’ attitude towards the security of the Baltic States has not changed since 2014, and they also support the idea of establishing a US military base in the Baltic States less than the Democrats.
The study was conducted in September of this year by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, a non-governmental organization.

Analysis: US Support for Baltic States Amid Russian Aggression
A recent study published on <a href="https://globalaffairs.org/research/public-opinion-survey/majorities-support-us-bases-key-allied-nations" rel="nofollow noopener" target="blank”>Global Affairs reveals an encouraging trend in American public opinion. The data shows that 57% of Americans would support the defense of the Baltic States in the event of Russian aggression [[1]].
Linas Kojala, head of the Center for Eastern European Studies, noted that this result is encouraging, emphasizing that public opinion is a significant factor in formal obligations [[1]]. This comes at a time when Russia has been actively pursuing territorial expansion in the Baltic region, such as its proposal to redraw sea borders in the area [[2]].
Furthermore, the study highlights the differing views of Republicans and Democrats on this matter, with 48% of Republicans and 48% of Democrats supporting the defense of the Baltic countries, respectively [[1]]. While there is no overwhelming consensus between the two parties, it is heartening to see that there is still a significant level of support for the Baltic States from both sides of the aisle.
The context of this study is particularly relevant in light of recent developments in the region. Russia has been making overtures to expand its territory in the Baltic Sea, with plans to redraw its water border with the Nordic and Baltic states [[3]]. The intentions behind this move are suspect, and it has raised alarm bells among the Baltic states and their allies.
In this context, the American public’s willingness to support the defense of the Baltic States is crucial. It sends a strong message that the United States will not stand idly by while Russia pursues its expansionist agenda in the region.
The study highlights the significance of public opinion in shaping foreign policy. In this case, the overwhelming support for the defense of the Baltic States serves as a weighty element of formal obligations, as Kojala notes. This signals to Russia that the United States is committed to upholding its obligations to its allies in the region.
the study’s findings offer a glimmer of hope in an increasingly tense region. The American public’s support for the defense of the Baltic States serves as a powerful deterrent against Russian aggression, and it underscores the importance of public opinion in shaping foreign policy. As the situation in the Baltic region continues to evolve, it is essential to keep a close eye on developments and ensure that the United States remains committed to defending its allies in the face of Russian aggression.
