On their t-shirts, caps, and even on their skin, thousands of souls wear the same red asterisk. A logo that not only represents infinity but also illustrates the history of generations. As if it were a ritual, what happens at the Monumental stadium has a first and last name: Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Far from the repetition and rehearsed choreographies of today, the group showed their pure rock personality. With a classic show where the connection with the people prevailed, he excelled with a particular set list that combined the adrenaline of his premieres with the obligatory passage through many of his classics. On the other side, they found an Argentine audience that did not stop shouting, poking and letting themselves be carried away by the music.

As if the years were nothing, bassist Flea burst onto the stage doing the vertical and walking with his hands. Immediately followingwards, the group – each one dressed in a blue garment, as a nod to the country – unleashed Can’t Stop, the first song of the night.

John Frusciante’s last visit had been 21 years ago, when the band arrived at the end of 2002, as part of the By the Way Tour.

After five years, the group returned to the country and made Argentine hearts tremble. Among the people you might see the T-shirts and caps of the Lakers, the emblematic basketball team of the city where the Peppers were born. With that same energy they followed songs like The Zephyr Song, Dani California, Aquatic Mouth Dance and Throw Away your Television.

For many it was reuniting with the band from their childhood, the one that obsessed them with their videos and songs, and that still takes them through the memories of their entire lives. And as if that were not enough, with its most successful lineup: Anthony Kiedis, John Frusciante, Flea and Chad Smith.

The atmosphere said it all, among the first meters few focused their eyes on their cell phones, almost all eyes were on John and Flea, who left words aside and seemed to speak only with their guitar and bass.

Throughout their career, the Red Hot Chili Peppers visited Argentina 8 times

The spirit of rock filled the Buenos Aires night and between jumps, pogos and hugs, the fans celebrated the return of the band.

Throughout their career they visited Argentina 8 times. The first, and which marks 30 years, was in 1993 (Obras Sanitarias, January 25 and 26), then 1999 (Luna Park, October 5 and 6), 2001 (Vélez Sarsfield, January 24), 2002 (River, October 16), 2011 (River, October 18), 2014 within the framework of Lollapalooza (Hipódromo de San Isidro, April 2) and in the same way in 2018 in the same festival (Hipódromo de San Isidro, March 16).

The night continued with Eddie, Soul to Squeeze, Parallel Universe, Strip my mind and Right on time, the latter with the intro to classic punk London Calling by The Clash, in which Frusciante received thousands of compliments. The presence of the prodigal son was no surprise. His last visit had been 21 years ago, when the band arrived at the end of 2002, as part of the By the Way Tour. At that time, in the midst of the economic crisis, Red Hot were making their fourth presentation in Argentina.

The guitarist’s contribution to the band is indisputable, since he participated in their fundamental albums. During the first stage, between 1988 and 1992, he recorded nothing less than the works with which the group made the leap to immortality: Mother’s Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers shined in River

Then, in 1992, the violist left the band. He returned recovered from his addictions six years later and recorded Californication, one of the Chili Peppers’ most successful albums. He was also part of By the Way and stayed until 2009, the year in which he retired once more to work alone. Ten years later, in 2019, he had his second comeback.

There was a total of almost two hours of show where the Red Hot reviewed the best of their career. The two songs absent from the set list, and highly desired by people, were Otherside, along with the classic Under the Bridge. This is because the band alternates the setlist from show to show, seeking to make each night different. Otherside – which is part of the album Californication and was published in 1999 – did play in Santiago, Chile and at the concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In this way, the door was left open for it to be heard this Sunday, on the Peppers’ second night in Argentina, like the Blood Sugar classic Sex Magik.

However, at the same time Argentina had a stellar song that was almost not played throughout the tour. Throughout his time in Costa Rica, his two shows in Chile and his five concerts in Brazil, the song Strip My Mind was played only once, in Porto Alegre. Thus, it was heard once more but this time in the Monumental stadium.

To close, the band said goodbye at the “climax” of the night, with great classics such as The Heavy Wing, Suck my Kiss, Californication, Black Summer, By the Way and Give it Away, among other songs, thus leaving the longing in Calls for your second night.
