Red Cross: Russian army sieges city of Malibo, where food shortage residents fight each other for food

During the siege of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol by Russian troops, people started attacking each other for food, even sabotaging other people’s vehicles to get gasoline, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Tuesday.

Many aid agencies say Ukraine’s southern port city is facing a “doomsday” scenario, which has been without water, electricity or heat for more than a week under continued Russian bombing. “Many people have no water at all. Four or five days ago, all the shops and pharmacies were looted,” Sasha Volkov, the ICRC’s representative in Malipo, said in a recording. “Some people still have food, But I’m not sure how long it will last. A lot of people are reporting that there is no food for their children.”

Civilian evacuation plans failed, and Ukraine and Russia accused each other of violating the ceasefire. Vukov said that a black market has emerged, residents of Malibo can buy vegetables but no meat, and there is a shortage of medical supplies.

In the voice message, Vukov also described the scene of civilians in the shelter, in this claustrophobic space, people struggled to stay warm and avoid being shelled by the Russian army. “People are starting to get sick because of the cold, and they have nowhere to go,” he said.

Some ICRC workers gather food from damaged or destroyed buildings and can last a few days longer. “Many of us started to get sick because of the humidity and cold. We tried to be as hygienic as possible, but it wasn’t always the case,” Vukoff said.

An airstrike on a children’s hospital in Malibo on the 9th killed at least three people, including a girl. The international community is outraged by the deteriorating humanitarian situation there. By occupying the strategic city of Maripo, Russia has been able to integrate forces from the previously annexed Crimean peninsula with forces in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.
