A Red Cross paramedic was fatally shot in Ethiopia, in the Tigray region in the north of the country, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced on Friday. He is the seventh member of the world’s largest humanitarian network to be killed this year, the ICRC said.

“Woldu Aregawi Berha, an ambulance driver, was shot dead while he was in a vehicle clearly bearing the Red Cross emblem,” according to the same source, adding that “seriously injured, he died before to arrive at the hospital.

Condemning this assassination, the ICRC added that “since the start of the year, seven members of the ICRC network teams have lost their lives as part of their humanitarian work.” “This is unacceptable. They are not a target,” he continued.

The ICRC confirmed on Thursday that four of its rescue workers and two patients they were transporting in an ambulance were killed in a strike on their vehicle in the central Gaza Strip on Wednesday. The ICRC is an independent and neutral institution that protects and assists victims of armed conflicts and other people affected by disasters or in health emergencies.
