Red Cross President Gerald Creator calls for compliance with international humanitarian law: “Civilian populations and emergency services must be protected.”
Vienna (OTS) – On Tuesday evening there were air strikes at the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza, killing hundreds of people. The hospital was badly damaged and survivors of the attack were admitted to Al-Shifaa Hospital. Gerald Creator, President of the Austrian Red Cross, emphasizes the statement of the International Committee of the Red Cross: “Hospitals should be places of refuge to preserve human life and not scenes of death and destruction. No patient should be killed in a hospital bed. No doctor should lose their life trying to save others.”
Increased suffering due to a lack of security
The President of the Austrian Red Cross explains: “International humanitarian law must be observed in armed conflicts. Hospitals, the civilian population, emergency services and the employees of humanitarian organizations must be protected. The violation of international humanitarian law means that the suffering is even greater and at the same time less aid can be provided because the safety of the aid workers is not guaranteed.”
