For the first time in the history of the win2day ICE Hockey League, EC Red Bull Salzburg and Hydro Fehérvár AV19 meet in a final series. Both teams rushed into the finals: Salzburg are still undefeated in the current postseason after sweeps against Znojmo and Vienna.
The Hungarians needed nine games to reach the final, first they landed the sweep against Pustertal and then prevailed 4-1 in the semifinals against Villach. Salzburg continues to walk in the footsteps of the spusu Vienna Capitals, who are the only team to have had a perfect postseason so far and marched to their second title in the club’s history in 2017 without losing in the playoffs.
Eleventh final participation for Salzburg
By qualifying for the 2022 finals, EC Red Bull Salzburg set a new ICE record: never before has a team managed to reach the final series eleven times. Of the ten participations so far – EC-KAC has also been in a final series ten times since the league was founded – the “Red Bulls” have won the title six times.
They last lifted the Karl Nedwed Trophy in 2016 when HC TESLA beat Orli Znojmo 4-2. Salzburg played the last final in 2018. At that time it lost to HCB Südtirol Alperia in seven games. Participation in the Endgame series is an absolute first for Hydro Fehérvár AV19. They are the ninth team to qualify for Finals.
Salzburg has a negative record in finals-opener: They lost seven out of ten opening games – but whenever Salzburg won the first game, it also went on to win the title.

EC Red Bull Salzburg and Hydro Fehérvár AV19 have faced each other 82 times. Salzburg won exactly 50 of these games and was only beaten 32 times. At home, the “Red Bulls” triumphed in 30 of 41 games. Fehérvár, meanwhile, won their last meeting on February 20 in Székesfehérvár 3-2 after Salzburg had twice been ahead.
The two teams only met once in the playoff. In the 2018/19 season, the “Red Bulls” won the quarter-finals 4-2.
