Red Bull F1 motorsport adviser Helmut Marko is critical of Sergio Perez’s attack on Turn 4 when he tried to overtake George Russell from the outside on the opening lap of the F1 Austrian Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez caught up with George Russell by turn 4, a tight right corner, and went around the outside, but when he came forward, Russell’s left front touched and spun.
Steward penalized George Russell with a five-second penalty and two penalty points for the Super License, which was not comforting to Sergio Perez.
Sergio Perez’s RB18, which went off course to gravel, damaged the floor and Red Bull Racing retired Perez.
“Clearly I was in front,” Sergio Perez expressed anger following parking the RB18 in the garage.
“In fact, George was responsible for controlling his car. He was clearly out of control and we were in contact.”
“There was nothing else I might do”
However, Helmut Marko is not impressed by Sergio Perez’s attack.
“Before the start, I told him not to go outside in that corner. That’s impossible,” Helmut Marko told Sky Sport Germany.
“I didn’t need it anyway. I’ve seen it before. It didn’t work.”
“After that, I suffered a lot of damage to the floor. I might have finished two laps late, but it didn’t make sense to continue. I should have saved my mileage.”
This is not the first time Sergio Perez has had an accident on Turn 4 of the Red Bull Ring. He paid the price off the track outside in the McLaren Lando Norris battle last year.
But the move was also a carbon copy of the battle between Lewis Hamilton in 2020 and Alexander Albon of Red Bull at the time.
“I don’t think Mercedes likes our car going around the outside of Turn 4,” Helmut Marko said.
“It was a shame because I saw the Czech Republic ahead.”
“This is almost a complete imitation of the case of Lewis and Albon a few years ago. It’s a shame that there wasn’t more space there.”
