Red Aurora Spectacular: Witness the Rare Phenomenon in Ladakh Skies

Ladakh has already proved that aurora can be seen not only in polar regions but also in India. Now the sky observatories at Hanle and Merak in Ladakh have recorded the red aurora. A rare red aurora was seen during the night scenes in early November.

In the same days, the sky was red in many parts of Europe. The red aurora was seen in countries like Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, Siberia, Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland and the Ural Mountains. Following this, the red aurora is visible from India.

Auroras appear when charged particles from the Sun collide with gas molecules in Earth’s atmosphere, emitting photons. It is mainly found in the polar regions and adjacent areas. The color of the aurora is determined by the gas molecules the solar particles collide with.

The red aurora was seen from the north side of our Hanley observatory. Dorje Angchuk, who is in charge of the Hanle Observatory, responded that this red color was visible from 10 pm to midnight on November 5. This is the second time this year that the Aurora Borealis has been photographed by the Hanle Vana observatory. Earlier, on April 23, Aurora was filmed in Hanle.

At intervals of eleven years, the amount of charged particles from the Sun increases. Although the current influx of charged particles from the Sun is low, it is likely to increase with the solar cycle. Therefore, more aurora borealis sightings will be visible in the coming years, including in Hanley. It will reach maximum in 2025. After a few years, the influx of charged particles from the Sun will decrease.

Hanle is also the only dark sky reserve in India. The 360-degree camera at the Indian Astronomical Observatory here captures scenes including the aurora borealis. At 4,500 meters (regarding 14,764 feet) above sea level, this observatory is the highest in the world. This vana observatory, the pride of India, is located in the village of the same name on the banks of the Hanle, a tributary of the Indus. It houses the world’s tallest optical telescope and infrared telescope.
