Red alert throughout Greece for the next 48 hours

At noon on Saturday, an inter-ministerial meeting was held, convened by the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias due to the extreme weather conditions that will prevail tomorrow and the following days. A meeting of the scientific Risk Assessment Committee had preceded it.

Very strong to gusty winds that will blow even during the night, very high temperatures and prolonged drought will create an explosive cocktail for the occurrence of dangerous fires, even mega fires.

Fire: These are the measures decided upon

According to information, the following was decided:

  • The Fire Department will be on alert with a general alert and deployment of ground and air forces.
  • In the areas of very high risk, forests, groves and parks will be closed by decisions of the Regions and Municipalities. The entrances will be guarded by officers of the Hellenic Police.
  • ELAS will carry out increased patrols in the forests and will be on full alert to evacuate citizens to safe places if necessary.
  • The Armed Forces will have increased patrols in forest areas and mountainous areas, while construction machinery will also be on hand, in order to immediately attempt to open fire zones if necessary.
  • The Coast Guard is on heightened alert
  • The Civil Protection mechanism of the Regions and Municipalities, as well as the Forestry Service, are on heightened alert.
  • Also on heightened alert are the DEDDIE and ADMIE, the EKAV, the competent services of the Ministries of Culture and Tourism, as well as the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels.
  • In the areas of very high risk, forests, groves and parks will be closed

The areas in the “red” for tomorrow are:

  • Attica
  • Central Evia
  • Southern Evia
  • Argolis
  • Boeotia
  • Corinthia
  • Crete

But in many more areas the risk is very high or high, as you can see on the map:

Vassilis Kikilias spoke to journalists about the fires, after the session of the Scientific Risk Assessment Committee held at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection for the weather conditions of the coming week and the meeting that followed, with the participation of all the involved agencies.

Immediately after, the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias spoke about the dangerous conditions that will prevail in the next period as they favor the occurrence of fires.

Specifically, Vassilis Kikilias said:

“From tomorrow, Sunday, until the fifteenth of August, extremely high and dangerous weather conditions will prevail for the occurrence of forest fires. We will have a combination of very strong winds of 6, 7 and with gusts of 8 Beaufort. No rain and drought and for this reason, half of Greece will be “in the red”, as can be seen on the map”.

He added: “I have asked for emergency measures to be implemented, involving the Army, the Police, the volunteers, the Fire Brigade and the Local Government. I ask all our fellow citizens to be alert and show great responsibility, because we will have a very difficult week.”
