Lagos (Nigeria)∙ Children in Lagos who come to school with a new bag and textbooks will also carry household items in another bag. Not to be pushed on the road, but to be given and received at the school office.

Many schools here buy recyclable waste like old bottles and plastic containers for a fee. The cost of goods supplied by each shall be apportioned to the fee.

The project was planned by an organization called African Clean Up Initiative, with the aim of bringing children who end their studies without a way to pay the fees back to school and also to make the country free of garbage. The organization manages the waste collected by the schools. At present, 40 schools are accepting waste from students for a fee as part of the scheme.

The money obtained from the sale of the materials brought by the students is used to buy uniforms and books for the children and to pay the salaries of the teachers. The average annual fee in the schools is Rs 10,000. The testimony of the schools is that they are able to find this amount from the garbage brought by the children. Now more children are coming to classes. The streets are also clean because people who are not at home collect the raw materials from the streets.
