The Upper Austrian police have uncovered a large-scale trade in counterfeit money on the Internet. Counterfeit banknotes worth around 366,000 euros were seized from a 20-year-old man from the Urfahr-Raum district. It was proven that he had bought and sold a total of more than 600,000 euros in counterfeit money. The police announced on Saturday that it was the largest seizure of counterfeit money in Austria to date.
Austrian customs discovered the man’s trail. He informed the Urfahr-Umwelt district police command regarding a suspicious mail item in June 2023. The package contained more than 300 counterfeit 20 euro notes that had been sent to the 20-year-old. After it was clear that the money was actually counterfeit, the Linz public prosecutor’s office ordered a search of the recipient’s house.
Counterfeit 10, 20, 50 and 100 euro notes with a nominal value of 365,970 euros as well as electronic data processing equipment and devices for forging credit and ATM cards were seized. The investigation revealed that the 20-year-old had purchased the counterfeit money over the Internet and resold it through several online shops he ran inside and outside the EU. According to the police, the man was also found to be involved in drug trafficking and the production of cannabis herb in an indoor plantation.
