The authorities in Bangladesh have confirmed that a record rise in the number of deaths caused by dengue fever has been recorded since the beginning of this year, making 2023 the deadliest year since the beginning of official records in 2000.
Today, Saturday, Channel News Asia reported that 291 people have died as a result of the disease since the beginning of this year, compared to 281 deaths in 2022, while the number of infections has reached 61,500 so far, while it was recorded last year as a whole 62,423. infection.
Health Minister Zahid Malik said the government has launched initiatives to curb the spread of mosquito-borne diseases and is making efforts to kill mosquito larvae following the rains.
The country’s hospitals are struggling to accommodate the large numbers of injured people, especially in the capital, Dhaka, while experts expect more infections to be recorded during the months of August and September.
It is noteworthy that there is no vaccine or medicine to treat dengue fever, which is common in South Asia, but early detection of the disease and access to appropriate medical care may contribute to reducing deaths to less than 1% of infected people.
