A violent storm with record rainfall flooded parts of northern Vienna on Saturday afternoon. According to ORF, the Vienna-Döblin area received 110 liters of precipitation per square meter, which is the highest summer value in the 152-year measurement history. The historical record is 139 liters in May 1885. There, a driver had to be rescued from his car that was stuck in water.
According to ORF TV, the S45 express train line between Hernars and Heiligenstadt in northwest Vienna was also disrupted due to flooding on the tracks. Additionally, on Saturday afternoon, trains were no longer able to reach Franz Josef station in Vienna’s Alsegrund, which is important for connecting with the surrounding areas in the north. Due to a faulty signal box, trains could only depart from or go to Klosterneuburg. Two tram lines in Vienna-Walling were also disrupted when a branch fell on an overhead line.
Heavy rain also prompted numerous calls for help from professional fire brigades. According to ORF, 220 storm operations have been conducted since 4 p.m. Urban areas are affected by storms very unevenly. The Untra weather station in Vienna-Favoriten measured only 0.3 liters of precipitation.
