Record rainfall continues to cause problems in Dubai

For the third day in a row, there were major traffic problems at Dubai International Airport. The largest amount of rainfall since measurements began in the desert country in 1949 has paralyzed the United Arab Emirates.

On Thursday, state-owned airline Emirates resumed check-ins at the airport following telling passengers to stay away on Wednesday.

– The hope is to return to a more or less normal state within the next 24 hours, says airport manager Paul Griffiths.

But even if check-in is open once more, it is still difficult to get to the airport itself. At least one of the major highways in Dubai is still blocked by the water masses, which has caused huge queues.

If you are lucky enough to get to the airport first, it is not guaranteed to be a hassle. Over 200 flights are either delayed or cancelled.

For the permanent residents, both schools and offices belonging to the public sector are closed for the rest of the week.

The rainy weather has made delivery of goods impossible to a large extent. This means empty shop shelves in large parts of the country.

In the Arjan district, the floods were so bad that a man used a canoe to carry people across the street.
