Record number of female directors at Cannes Film Festival

The organizers of the 76th Cannes International Film Festival have announced the list of participants. It turned out that the official program announced a record number of films made by female directors.

Six such entries will debut at the festival. Selected films and directors include Chimera (Alice Rohrwacher), Club Zero (Jessica Hausner), Last Summer (Catherine Breilla), Anatomy of a Single Parachute (Justine Triet), Banel and Adama (Ramata- Tulay Si) and “Daughters of Olfa” (Kawther Ben Haniya). The previous record of five female directors in the competition was set last year.

Since the Cannes Film Festival has presented a list of 19 films that will compete in the main competition, the total number of women filmmakers remains below the 50 percent mark. A few more additions from Festival CEO Thierry Fremaux are expected in the coming weeks, so the ratio may change.

Such well-known directors as Ken Loach, Wim Wenders, Hirokazu Kore-eda and others will present their film projects to the judgment of an authoritative jury.

The 76th Cannes Film Festival will host the world premieres of the Hollywood films “Indiana Jones 5 and the Clock of Destiny” and “The Killers of the Flower Moon”.

When will the 76th Cannes Film Festival take place?

This year, the Cannes Film Festival runs from 16 to 27 May. The opening film will be Maiwenn’s Jeanne DuBarry, starring Johnny Depp, screened out of competition.
