Record low birth rate in Russia – adressa.no

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia has been affected by a number of demographic challenges. Among these are an increasingly aging population, the mass exodus of men due to the Ukraine war and the lowest birth rate in 17 years.

– The level is now terribly low – 1.4 births per woman. This is comparable to European countries, Japan and other countries. But it is disastrous for the nation’s future, says Dmitry Peskov, who is a spokesman for President Vladimir Putin.

– Anyone with many children is a hero. We live in the world’s largest country, and there are fewer of us every year. The only way to counteract this is to increase the birth rate, he says.

When the Soviet Union ceased to exist in 1991, Russia had 148 million inhabitants. After a long period of few births and many deaths, the population is now down to 144 million.

Birth rates have not increased again, despite Putin’s government giving generous grants and housing subsidies to large families.

Among the problems in recent years are a high number of deaths during the corona pandemic, hundreds of thousands of men fleeing the country to avoid being mobilized for the Ukraine war and the lowest immigration in ten years.

Russia’s population is set to drop to 130 million in the 2040s, according to demographers.
