record label for designers of 3D printed consumer products

It may sound a bit old-fashioned, but the term record label that Cubee uses for the new CubeeRecords service does reflect what the platform wants. Designers can offer their collection via CubeeRecords to retailers who have the products printed on demand via a decentralized production network of 2,400 3D printing companies. With this step, Cubee wants the designers to receive fairer compensation for their work.

Cubee CEO Uriah Meadan is shocked by how poorly the 3D printing ecosystem is able to properly compensate designers for their work. That got him thinking and now leads to the start of CubeeRecords. Compare it with the former record labels: artists who marketed their work under the umbrella of such a label and received their royalties for it.

Total package for designers

The label is an extension of Cubee’s existing platform of tools and solutions to help launch, operate and grow made-on-demand 3D printing businesses. The platform is now active in more than 50 countries and is committed to offering high-quality end-to-end commercial licensing services for designers. The service goes further than just offering commercial access to STL files to licensees. They also include business services and solutions such as ready-to-use marketing resources, technical support, business consulting, and a global peer community of business owners. “We already had the infrastructure to support the distribution, sales, marketing and production of 3D products, so bonding with designers under a record label model made perfect sense,” said Uriah Meadan.

Quality instead of quantity

The most important part of CubeeRecords’ commercial licensing service “Hive” is the exclusivity of each designer’s collections and the royalty system that fairly compensates designers for each sale made. “By collecting royalties, Cubee has made it possible for me to focus on the quality of sellers rather than quantity,” says Gazzaladra, one of the 3D designers who oversaw the collection at Cubeerecords. Commercial licenses for the Gazzaladra catalog are limited and selective for only 50 sellers worldwide. This prevents market saturation. Gazzaladra says the record label has reduced management overhead and increased opportunities for licensees.

enforcement

Another designer who offers his commercial catalogs exclusively through Cubee is Ales Bloem, who uses FDM printing for the Embodied Ideas collection. He says, “Cubee manages everything from sales funnel to access control, to licensee due diligence and copyright enforcement. With their support system for my commercial licenses, I can focus on creating even better products.”

Public acceptance

The founders of Cubee believe that this concept will bring the goal of local, responsible and waste-free production of consumer goods closer. CubeeRecords is currently working on bringing more designers and buyers of commercial licenses on board.
