Taylor Swift continues to break her records: The Tortured Poets Department has become the most listened to album in a single day on Spotify, the leading streaming platform. With Ttpd (as you have now been nicknamed by fans), released at midnight on Friday 19 April, the pop star also became the most listened to artist in a single day in the history of the music streaming platform. Ttpd is the first album to be downloaded over 200 million times in a single day. The record belonged to Swift herself who is now responsible for the top three most downloaded albums in a single day: in addition to Ttpd, Midnights and 1989 (Taylor’s version).
The new album – the 11th studio album – is the first released following the end of Taylor Swift’s relationship with Joe Alwyn which lasted six years, “a secret double album, because I have written so many tormented poems in the last two years and I wanted to share them with you ”, said the pop star while presenting his new work on Instagram. Fifteen songs that crown Swift’s epic, who had a dazzling 2023 between a shower of awards and the international success of her The Eras Tour.
The songs on Ttpd tell of the anger, sadness, desire and confusion following the end of a story, a pain in which fans identify with in a sort of collective catharsis that Taylor Swift explained in a post on Instagram: “Who he writes is a firm believer that our tears become sacred in the form of ink on a page,” said the artist. “Once we tell our saddest story, we can let go of it.”
