Eugene: Slovenia and Brazil players with a record-breaking performance at the World Athletics Championships. The stars of day 5 of the championships are Slovenia’s Kristian Sey in the men’s discus throw and Alison dos Santos of Brazil in the men’s 400m hurdles. Eleanor Patterson broke the Australian national record in the women’s long jump and Britain’s Jake Wightman edged out Olympic champion gold hopefuls in the men’s 1,500m.

Alison dos Santos returns from Eugene in the men’s 400m hurdles to become the first Brazilian athlete to win gold on the world stage.

Santos broke the championship and South American record of 46.29 seconds. American stars Ray Benjamin and Trevor Basit took silver and bronze respectively.

A surprise gold for Slovenia’s Kristian Sey following an upset win with a championship record in the men’s discus throw. Christian broke the meet record by throwing the discus to 71.13 meters in the third attempt and placed on the podium. This is the first time Say has won gold in any international championship. Silver and bronze went to Lithuanian players. Mikolas Alekna won the silver with a throw of 69.27m, while Andreas Gadzius took the bronze with 67.55m. Olympic champion and 2019 World Championship winner Daniel Staal of Sweden finished fourth with a throw of just 67.10m. Stall’s best performance came in the fifth attempt.

British star shocks Olympic champion in men’s 1,500m race Britain’s Jake Wightman won the gold medal in a thrilling contest. Norway’s Olympic champion Jakob Ingbreitsen suffered an unexpected defeat. When the bell rang for the final lap, the Nerva star was in the lead. But with 200 meters to go from the finishing point, the British player overtook Ingbrightsen with an incredible leap to win the gold. Ingbrightsen took silver in three minutes, 29.47 seconds behind Wightman who crossed the finish line in three minutes and 29.23 seconds. Spain’s Mohammed Kathir won the bronze (3:29.90).

Australia’s Eleanor Patterson wins gold in the women’s high jump at the World Athletics Championships. Patterson broke the Australian national record and won gold by clearing 2.02 meters. Patterson defeated Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchykh in a close fight. Mahuchikh is the gold medalist in this year’s World Indoor Championship. Mahuchikh’s attempt to clear 2.04 meters in the last attempt failed and Patterson sealed the gold. Although he successfully crossed the target, Mahuchikh was humiliated when he hit his foot and fell on the bar. Italy’s Elena Viortigara, who crossed two meters, won the bronze.

Three-time world champion and defending champion Maria Lazytskin of Russia did not compete in Eugene due to a ban imposed in the wake of the Ukraine invasion.
