Holidays in Switzerland: That’s what it’s all regarding

  • Swiss hotels had a record year.

  • There have never been so many bookings.

  • Asian guests in particular were often there.

Hotels in Switzerland are celebrating a record year. In 2023 there were more than 40 million overnight stays for the first time, as the Federal Statistical Office (BFS) writes in a statement.

The hotel industry clearly exceeded the 40 million mark. It recorded 41.8 million overnight stays. That is 3.5 million or 9.2 percent more than in the previous year.

These tourists stayed in the hotels

People from Switzerland booked slightly fewer hotels. 20.8 million overnight stays correspond to a slight decrease of 224,000 or 1.1 percent. But the level is still high. Only in 2021 and 2022, during Corona restrictions abroad, were there more bookings from Switzerland in Switzerland.

There was a significant increase in demand from foreign guests in 2023 despite the strong franc. It rose by 3.7 million or 21.8 percent to 20.9 million overnight stays.

The hotels recorded the largest increase in tourists from Asia with an increase of 56.4 percent to a total of 4.1 million overnight stays. China contributed the biggest increase, although the numbers were even higher in 2019.

South Korea and India followed behind. The USA set a record with four million overnight stays. Overnight stays by European guests rose by one million to twelve million.

Every month better than the previous year

There was not a single month where there was a lull; in each month there were more bookings than in the respective month of the previous year. The increase was particularly high in January at 36.2 percent. In the months from April to December, hotels registered more overnight stays than ever before in the last thirty years.

The Zurich region recorded the largest increase, followed by Bern and Geneva. The regions of Lucerne/Lake Lucerne, Valais and Vaud also recorded a significant increase.
