The number of candidates for the National Council elections on October 22 reached a new record this year. The average age is the highest in more than 30 years and the proportion of women is stable, according to figures published Monday by the OFS.

No less than 5,909 candidates are applying for one of the seats in the Chamber of the People in the twenty cantons with proportional representation, i.e. 27% more than in 2019. Among them are 40.8% women, compared to 40, 3% four years ago (and 32.5% in 1991).

More surprisingly, even if ten candidates are only 18 years old, the average age of the contenders is the highest since at least 1991: 43.6 years, compared to 41.75 in 2019 and 40.59 in 2015, according to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). Overall, the contenders are younger on the left and among the Greens, as well as among women.

Applications are most numerous at the Center and among the Vert’liberals, with 1,099 and 839 applicants respectively. Together, these parties represent almost a third of all candidates.
