– The mercury exceeded 37 degrees in Geneva
This is one of the highest temperatures recorded in the canton. The number of elderly people hospitalized in emergency has increased.

The 37.4 degrees measured in Geneva on July 11 are among the ten highest temperatures recorded since 1864.

This Tuesday, the thermometer reached highs in Geneva. The mercury rose above 37 degrees. But if the day took place under a blazing sun, it ended under the grayness and with the threat of a violent storm.
At the end of the followingnoon, MeteoSwiss recorded 37.4 degrees in its Cointrin station. This figure is in the top 10 of the highest temperatures measured in Geneva since records began in 1864. Fountains and bodies of water were stormed, everyone trying to cool off.
With these scorching temperatures, the elderly are particularly affected. At the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), there is an increase in emergency admissions to the Trois-Chêne Hospital, which specializes in geriatrics. However, the heat is not the only cause. These patients generally suffer from several pathologies and the heat only aggravates their condition.
Stay hydrated
In addition, since many attending physicians or caregivers have gone on vacation, the elderly are more likely to turn to emergency services. The HUG are not yet able to quantify this increase in admissions, since we are only in the first days of strong heat.
A little reminder for the elderly: don’t forget to stay well hydrated, even when you don’t feel thirsty, avoid physical exertion and seek shade. And for others: don’t forget to check in on your relatives, acquaintances or elderly neighbors who live alone.
